Burundi's opposition leader registers for presidential election

Xinhua, May 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Burundi's opposition leader Agathon Rwasa Saturday registered for the presidential election scheduled for June 29 amid protests against the third term of incumbent President Pierre Nkurunziza.

"I filed my application for the presidential election for respect of the country's laws and the electoral timetable. I filed my candidacy because I don't want Nkurunziza to go alone to the election," said Agathon Rwasa.

Rwasa will run for presidency as a representative of a coalition of independent candidates known as "Burundians' Hope."

Other opposition candidates who declared their candidacy include Jean de Dieu Mutabazi representing the Coalition for a Participatory Opposition (COPA), former Burundian President and Senator Domitien Ndayizeye representing the RANAC opposition collation, Jean Minani representing the Front for Democracy in Burundi (FRODEBU-Nyakuri) and Jacques Bigirimana representing the National Liberation Forces (FNL).

On Friday, Nkurunziza announced his candidacy despite protests by the opposition and the civil society that kicked off on April 26. Endi
